Tui Na, or tuina, is a form of therapeutic body manipulation technique that contains basic elements of both modern physiotherapy and chiropractic practice.
It has been used as a treatment modality in China for over 2,000 years and, as according to the theories of TCM, derives its therapeutic effects from its ability to promote the regular flow of Qi throughout the body.
Through the manual application of point pressure, joint manipulation, pulling force and classical massage-like techniques, the skillful use of Tui Na can be very effective in the relief of symptoms resulting from such conditions as :
- Low Back Pain
- Scoliosis
- Frozen shoulder syndrome
- Sprains & strains
- TMJ (Temporo-mandibular Joint disturbances)
- Herniated disk syndromes
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Myofascial pain disorders
- Muscle spasms & Adhesions
- Tennis elbow
A typical session of tuina could involve the use of a variety of herbal liniments and oils chosen for their specific healing and therapeutic properties. In accordance with the holistic nature of TCM, Tui Na is rarely ever used alone, however, but is often combined with acupuncture and herbal medications to bring about the desired effects.
